Arts Hill Research
Spring 2010

Norristown
Arts Hill Research

During the spring of 2010 a group of Cabrini college students researched the experience of six neighboring areas that used the Arts as part of a strategy to develop and invigorate communities.

This web page contains area profiles and identifies key factors that students felt were key to the success (or failure) of these initiatives.
This survey was
conducted by a group
of business students
from Cabrini College in
Radnor PA..
In studying the efforts of neighboring communities, Cabrini students identified the following key factors that appear to be important to the successful development of an Arts or Main Street District:
1.  Community Support:  As most initiatives rely (to a degree) on volunteers, successful initiatives engage the community and inspire ongoing participation.
2.  Organization:  All successful efforts have one (or more) formal organizations, almost always including a Main Street or general business organization.
3.  Funding: All efforts require funding.  Proper organization and community support are likely prerequisites to securing funding.
4. Continuity and Time:  All successful efforts take time to take root and mature; successful programs seem to be easily repeatable, allowing an audience and reputation to develop over time. Continuity allows social (word-of-mouth) promotion of events.
5.  Linkages to Existing Organizations:  Successful programs don't operate in a vacuum; programs are linked to a variety of other community initiatives.
6. Critical Mass of Businesses:  A single arts venue is not enough to create an arts district; a critical mass of stores, restaurants and arts activities is required.
